A carpet quote comes down to a handful of things: how much floor you're covering, the grade of carpet you choose, the pad that goes under it, and the labor to get the old floor out and the new one in. Square footage sets the starting point — three bedrooms is a very different job from a whole first floor — and everything below moves it from there.
What moves the price

- Pad — skimping here is a false economy; good pad extends carpet life
- Stairs — they're labor-intensive and priced separately, by the flight
